What an E-book Can Do

As mentioned in our discussion of e-book file formats, there are e-books with static pages and e-books with dynamic pages. Static-page e-books in the PDF format will be familiar to all of us as they aren't really any different than the PDF files we work with and read everyday. Dynamic-page e-books might not be so familiar.
To the left are screenshots from one of our e-books in a dynamic-page format. This happens to be an EPUB version of the book being viewed on an iPhone in Apple's iBooks reader, though there are numerous other reader applications available for the iPhone and other devices. Each device and application will handle a given EPUB or MOBI file slightly differently, but the sample here is a good representation of the standard range of look and ability.
Along with the ability to change the size of the type, highlight passages, and bookmark pages as shown here; most e-reader applications will offer additional features as well:
| Change the font and color |
Look up definitions |
Search the text and your notes |
| Make notes | Email selections from the text | Follow links and connect to the web |
