Source of identity

A couple interesting museum graphic identities have come to my attention just in the last couple days:

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art's was designed by 2x4 (who I worked with on the rebranding on the Gardner Museum some years ago) and the New Museum identity was done by Wolff Olins and Omnivore. While I like the particular feel and originality of each logo, I was particularly interested in the sources of each:

At left is a poster by artist John Baldessari, which 2x4 was asked to work off of for LACMA's logo (I believe the final product may also be a full typeface). And at right is the new New Museum building in New York, by architectural duo SANAA.
Artist, architect, designer, institution — Because of these sources, because each identity is more than an arbitrarily defined set of colors and typefaces, each has a depth and richness many others lack.
